I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve noticed that my blog has a whole new look these days, and it\u2019s all due to a talented artist named Sherry Meidell.\u00a0 Sherry lives in West Bountiful, Utah. With her husband Dave, former member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Though Utah is home, they venture everywhere.\u00a0 Recently they were on a long term mission to Hawaii.\u00a0 Though hit by the Covid pandemic, the mission continued online.\u00a0 The Meidells have five grown sons and several grandchildren.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sherry illustrated three of my picture books published by Boyds Mill Press, so we go back a long way.\u00a0 She studied a lot of my old family photos to get the feel of Georgia mountain country of bygone days. And did she ever get it right!\u00a0 She didn\u2019t need the photos to capture the love of family\u2014we already had that in common.\u00a0 I learned that when my husband and I visited her on a trip out west a few years ago.\u00a0 She and her family took us in as if we were long lost relatives.\u00a0 They even included us in a family dinner.\u00a0 It made me realize that all over the country\u2014and the world\u2014family is still what nourishes and renews us all.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from family, Sherry has other interests.\u00a0 She paints, and she illustrates for publication.\u00a0 She attends conferences, and teaches art.\u00a0 Her biking and hiking adventures give her ideas for her painting.\u00a0 She also speaks to children in schools everywhere.\u00a0 At this point, you may well be asking what\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0this woman do?\u00a0 Not much!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I decided to give my blog a fresh new look, I knew Sherry would be the one to capture the whole concept of strollicking\u2014having fun, frolicking, wasting time creatively, kicking up your heels.\u00a0 And I was right. Did she ever nail me on that ramshackle motorcycle with my two hounds, traveling the curving mountain roads of my childhood.\u00a0 Okay, I\u2019ve never ridden a motorcycle, and never intend to.\u00a0 Or at least not until I\u2019ve learned to ride a bicycle without falling and shattering my one remaining \u201cgood knee.\u201d And, no, I don\u2019t have\u2014and have never had\u2014hounds.\u00a0 But I\u2019ve had many dogs, sandwich mutts (half bred), and if I were going to travel on a motorcycle, I\u2019d take my present dogs with me, along with my husband and two or three grandkids.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, the Faye in Sherry\u2019s art has a better figure than the real Faye, and she has better hair (which is FINE with me, Sherry).\u00a0 Other than these small points, I will paraphrase Huck Finn when talking about Mark Twain: She told the truth mainly.\u00a0 She certainly made an eye-catching improvement in \u201cStrollicking.\u201d And as far as I\u2019m concerned, for a woman whose home is in Utah, she miraculously captured the spirit of the Georgia mountains as I remember them from my childhood. Thanks, Sherry.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
